Based on similar projects we have installed as far as window type and design style; we are confident to do you project for as little as $130 on the low end and $250 on the high end.

To give you an idea what that’s based on, I couldn’t see you project being anything less than $16.5 k and anything more than $33k.

Now before I introduce you RBA’s windows; I would like to share with you something about Secret Shopper. Have you heard of it?

An employee’s mother’s house needed windows, so we took the opporunity to do a little research and see how RB stack up in the marketplace. We got a couple of quotes from different window companies, and I would really like to share this with you if I may.

Without strong foundation, your house would quickly sink into the ground evenly, resulting in cracks and damage of your home. It’s the same for a windw unit, It needs to be able to support a glass pack unit that could sometimes go up to 95lb.

    - break seal > pin holes> argo gas leak>moisure-laden air enters with dusts
    - settles and stick inside the glass

    This is what happens to a vinyl window over time.
    With constant expansion and contraction, what do you think happens?
    It cannot push against the stud, thus putting pressure on the glass pack. And what do you think happens when the glass pack gets all that pressure from both ends?
    It will break the seal, causing pinholes, leakage of argon gas. Now this is what happens to your window pack. Foggy,

    As you can see the frame that went soft and started to warp.
  3. MOLDY
    Now, what causes mold?
    Dampness. With the moisture that is trapped between the glass panes, is what causes mold to grow and spread.

  1. SAD MAIL BOX- LACK OF STRENGTH

This is what we call a sad mailbox. Looks like half the post is made of plastic. Weight is probably 5 pounds?
This is a standard box store vinyl window that has been installed into the opening. As you can see, it doesn’t quite fit, so they had to fill the surrounding with any sort of materials, mostly commontly fiberglass insulation,. covered with a filler strip. This gap only invites moisture, bugs,.

  1. GLASS LOSS
A

This is also a very typical situation, where you get the windows changed at different times. The thick wide frame usually indicates that it needs to bulk up in material to provide structure and strength. Leaving less glass view, usually up to 20% less.

TIE DOWN: It’s such a shame sometimes looking at homeowner’s windows overlooking a gorgeous backyard view of trees. With such a huge amount of frame, I felt like the windows are not doing the homeowner’s justice .

5.WHY WHITE

A

By now you must wonder why many vinyl windows are just white? If not, slight tinge of yellow.
White/black shirt analogy- . When it is a darker colour, vinyl like our black shirt tends to absorb more heat, hence softening it making it more flexible. Companies made them white; simply to prolong their lifespan.

6.PRICING DIFFERENCES

Here are some different pricing for the same project.
Any idea how it is so varied?
Entry-level (box store) vs virgin vinyl
Service level?

Theys usually claim virgin vinyl comprised of of no recyled vinyl, but because there is no industry standard to regulate that,. there is still indeed recylcled elements in there, and they only have to have up to 18% of virgin materials.

The recycled vinyl is comprised of grinded up scraps of vinyl making them more brittle and easily to crack.

TIE-DOWN: At the end of the day, we really do not know how true Virgin vinyl is and what really goes into recycled vinyl. Is that something you would want in your windows?

  1. ALUMINIUM REINFORCED FRAME
A

Why do you think they put a galvanised steel or aluminium rod inside the chambers of the vinyl frame? What are you thoughts?
I suppose the manufufacturer intends to design a slimmer look, and perhaps increase its strength?

I suppose this hybrid could be considered some sort of composite design, but they are afterall still two separate materials that is attempting to reduce each other’s weaknesses?

TIE-DOWN VINYL

A

Vinyl is still vinyl, regardless of grade.

Knowing its a flexible material, its constant expansion and contraction challenged by our Canadian extreme temperatures its lack of strength and structure; would replacing your current windows with the same material still cause the same issue you have today? Broken seal, mold, foggy panes?

  1. FIBERGLASS
A
  • is thin glass melted from moulds, resulted into woven sheets.
  • has to be combined with resin or epoxy to give it structure and strength

PROS: thin frame, waterproofing, good insulation
CONS:

  1. Screw, glue, staple corner - This type of joint cannot be welded at the corners, thus lead to air and water infiltration
  2. High maintenance- will degrade in ultraviolet, gel coat. like taking care of a boat
  3. Off-gasing - When the material gets heated up, there would be offgasing and VOCS that comes from the product. This can be hazardous to health.
  4. Not environmetally friendly- It is regulated by OSHA, and requires extreme care and precautions. (Eg, Abandoned fibreglass boats are releasing toxins all over the world)

TIE-DOWN: Now that you know the material and its hazardous component with risk of off-gasing, high manteinance work, would it be a material you want to use for your windows in your home?

ALUMINIUM CLAD

A

Aluminium clad is afterall wood wrapped in aluminium on the outside. Now, why do you think it’s constructed that way?

PROS:
Wood- structure,
Aluminium- durabability, low maintenance. more colour options

CONS:
I have found that many homeowners face dry rot or wood rot.
While aluminium is a suitable material for warmer climates, it is sadly not the case here for our long winters in Canada.
Metal conducts heat and cold, aluminum windows are more prone to condensate. If you want energy efficiency, this is the last option you want to consider.

Like a pop can out of a fridge, the window frame also sweats, condensates and will now trap the moisture between the wood and itself. Wood that is inside loves water, and will tend to soak it all up , creating mold. It also creates a gap, for bugs, insects, moisture, water to enter.

Now the worst thing is that any rot that is happening is something we don’t usually see upfront until it’s really bad.

So, let me ask you this,and is it fair to say that using a aluminium-clad product to replace your window, it’s something that you’re not going to do?

WOOD

What do you think of wood material in a window frame?
Why?Old wood vs new wood.
Old-growth wood derives from forests that are naturally developed over time, has trees over 120 years old giving in structural integrity. Where as this one also called a secondary growth, the trees are grown quickly, but not as suitable for projects that need structural strength.

My old house has joists consists of full-length 100 yr old lumber that is still structurally sound today. But when i had to open some of the walls during reno, I had to put in engineered wood or steel because today’s full piece of lumber is no longer as strong.

PROS: Structurally sound, gorgeous

CONS: Rot, mold, high expansion and contraction, high maintenance. Not weather resistant.

Andersen has looked at many different options of materials,and in fact even had their own wood clad windows. Look at the the high price tag.

To sum it up, we know the materials we’ve seen so far have pros and cons, wood gorgeous and structurally sound; vinyl low maintenance and not a heat conductor.

Our goal was to get the best qualities of both wood and vinyl without the issues they have been used alone.After over 20+years of research, fibrex was born- a TRUE composite wood where 2 separate materials of 40% reclaimed wood fiber and 60% thermoplastic polymer is married together by using heat and compression alone - no glue, no toxins, no additives.

FIBREX- How fibrex is made

A

To make Fibrex, we begin by heating the reclaimed wood fibers to extract moisture. Next, we heat the polymer to a specific temperature and then combine the polymer with the wood fibers.

The polymer and wood fibers then bond at the molecular level to create a new compound. The polymer encases and fills each cell of the wood fiber, and then the wood fibers align and bind together. This makes our Fibrex material moisture-resistant and as strong as wood. This evolutionary material can no longer be separated and pulled apart.

It then goes through a co-extrusion process with an all-weather capstock, at the same time the colour of the capstock is being baked into the outside of the material, and this gives you any style , shape and colour you desire.

FIBREX- TESTING

A

When they released their fibrex material in 1970s, they put fibrex windows in some of their employees’ homes, and after 20 years, they took those windows out; tested them and this is what they found out.
They maintained weather tight seals
No difference in frame degradation - No crack, no peel, no rot, no expansion or contraction.

It is 99.9% still working to its best performance.

FIBREX APPLICATION

  1. Have you walked on the boardwalks in the lakeshore.
    Every year, the city spends hundreds and thousands of dollars replacing boardwalks that splinter, crack and shatter from the freezing water undeneath them. They would do this year on year. Now, why would you do the same thing to only get the same result? So, composites is the way they are going. It’s 3 times more expensive than wood, but the only maintenance is keeping it clean with powerwash.
  2. In the building industry, composites is really the next generation- it’s currently used in siding, decking, railing, roofing. Composites give you an alternative of wood by itself or vinyl by itself as long as its a true composite which fibrex is.
    Trex decking, one of the largest deck company in North America licenses our Fibrex material for their decking and railing system.
  3. Solar panels brackets - Because of its lightweight, strength and durability properties, Solon a manufacturer of solar panels system, licenses the fibrex material for the solar panels brackets that hold the panels on the roof.
