You lose energy in windows in 2 different ways;
1. Loose fittings- anything around it that is not properly sealed.
2.Glass

Now, I’m going to share with you the Heat lamp test.
I have a heat lamp, BTU meter and 5 different types of glass.

This is going to show you how each glass perform, how it prevents the heat from entering your your home during summer time, and how it prevents the heat loss from leaving during winter time. Ultimately, you want to keep the heat where it belongs.

  1. NO GLASS
  2. SINGLE PANE
  3. DOUBLE PANED - Standard run of the mill double paned without any type of performance coating. Whether or not if there is gas or coating on it, it’s up to them.
  4. HARD COAT LOW-E - This is where the double paned has a hardcoating on it, typically silver oxide that is a reflective material sprayed on the outside surface., or baked inside. It is like a sunscreen you put on. The hardcoat could wear off and give you a yellow stain.
  5. DOUBLE SILVER LOW-E4- Which is RBA’s glass pact, has the double coating silver oxide on the inside of the glass surface, which means it’s not even exposed to the outside weather. It blocks the UV rays from damaging your furniture and floor inside your home, eg. flooring, painting, drapes,. furniture.
    This high performance glass gives it 56% more energy efficiency in the summer
  6. SMARTSUN GLASS - This glass pact has triple coating of silver oxide on the inside of the glass surface, giving it ability to block 95% of harsh UV rays. It has a slight tinge shade on it.
    For warmer climates where you spend more cooling instead of heating, SmartSun glass delivers our best overall performance.

SEAMLESS STAINLESS STEEL SPACER
The metal that keeps the glass pact in shape, called the spacer is what’s between the 2 pieces of glass. Our spacer is made out of stainless steel, not aluminium, for a good reason; it’s less of a conductor.

The corner of our glass pact is rounded with a whole piece, with only 1 joint, but because it’s steel, we can solder that. We don’t want joints in the corner,as they are pressure points. One of the reasons, why glass pact loses argon gas easily is beause the spacer is aluminium, and also with joints at the corners; as vinyl expands and contracts, it puts pressure in those corner and they will start to separate.

BUTYL PUTTY
Why do windows have 2 panes of glass, but not 1?
It’s what contain the argon gas. Our windows are filled 99% argon gas, in an argon filled room with robots. Argon gas is heavier than air, so if it’s not filled all the way up, it will settle at the bottom. And when seal fails, this is where the argon gas will get drained. (SHOW READING IN DIFFERENT LEVELS)

How long can you keep the gas in there? That is determined if the window is built right; its a quality product,; but you’ll be happy to know that the Andersen products have a 20 years warranty on all the glass pact and its energy effiency.

The butyl is the primary seal that keeps the glass in there. This butyl seal that we have is used for commercial PPE gas masks and freezers. The secondary seal is the silicone is only to fill in the gaps gives it structure , and keep the spacer from moving.

So you can take our high-performance glass pact unit and put it in a vinyl frame, it will fail.
You can take a glass pact and put it in our fibrex frame, and it will fail.

What makes it work the way it does, is everything you see in this picture.
It’s all about the combination of eveything we put in. (SOUP ANALOGY)
This allows us to confidentaly put in the long warranties behind our windows.

Stainless steel with no joint and butly did not save this window from failing, mortise and tenon joint means nothing when the window rotted away.
