Rules of Restraint

A
  • Cargo must be tied down to prevent movement in all directions
  • Tiedown devices must be installed to privde adequate restraint without over stressing the tiedown fittings
  • tie down device must lead off in the general direction of the cargo being restrained
  • Tie down devices are attached in a symmetrical pattern, even number of devices FWR and AFT
  • devices must be appropriate so neither cargo nor tiedown device are damaged
  • use nylon strap on soft cargo
  • do not attach more than 50% of tiedowns to the axles.
  • tie down placed on cargo positioned on the main floor and secured to the ramp shall be removed before opeing the ramp.
  • after ramp is closed, recheck cargo loaded and restrained to the ramp for security and tautness

Rules of Restraint 2

A
  • if CG is remote from the geometric center of the load, add an additional tiedown on each side of the load so CG is between a pair or tie downs
  • neer mix straps and chains for restraint in the same direction
  • loads prepared on platforms for airdrop must meet all restrain criteria
  • if possible, a tie down device is attached directly to a cargo unit and not merely passed over or around it, applies to more than one direction.
  • varying the angle of attachment a tiedown device can be attached to the cargo so that restraint is avail in up to 3 directions simultaneously.
  • the lines of action of the tie down device should intersect above the cargo center of gravity. reduces the tendency of the cargo to overturn when subjected to combined upward and side loads
