Crutches

  • Length
    • 2-3 fingerwidths below anterior anxillary fold to a lateral and slightly in front of foot
    • not measured from any point on the foot
  • Handgrips
    • Elbow flexion will be 30 degrees
  • Gaits
    • 2 Point
      • move one crutch and opposite foot together
      • two affected legs; mild problems
    • 3 point
      • move two crutches and bad leg together
      • when one leg is affected
    • 4 point
      • everything moved independently
      • two affected legs; severe problems
    • Swing through
      • non-weight bearing
      • for two braced extremities
      • for amputees
  • Stairs
    • Up with the good, down with the bad
      • → crutch moves with the bad leg

Cane

A
  • Hold cane on the unaffected side
  • Advance cane with the opposite side for a wide base of support

    • pick up → set it down → walk to it
  • do not tie belongings to front of the walker
    • sides ok
  • Chair to walker
    • hold on to chair → stand up → grab walker
