Who can administer/dispense meds in any/all levels of LTC facilities?
- Primary care provider (PCP)
- registered nurse (RN)
- licensed practice nurse
What is a Level IV facility? and what is special about them?
level 4 = rest home (basic nursing home?)
patients are ambulatory and not in need of medical/nursing services (level 2-3) but are unable to properly care for themselves due to old age and require a more protective environment
In Level IV facilities a responsible person** thats completed appropriate **training may administer/dispense medications

- ) In a locked cabinet/closet large enough to fill all resident’s meds without crowding the nursing station. Fridge meds should be placed in the fridge near/at the nursing station in a locked box

Where should rubbing alcohol be stored?
Poisons and medications for “external use only,” including rubbing alcohol, shall be kept in a locked cabinet or compartment separate and apart from internal medications.
Can a patient have any medications in their room?
yes! drugs approved for self-administration
what is required on a prescription for someone in a LTCF?
The label affixed to each individual medication container shall clearly indicate the
- resident’s full name
- primary care provider’s name
- prescription number
- name of drug
- strength of drug
- quantity,
- dose,
- frequency and
- method of administration,
- date of issue
- expiration date of all time-dated drugs
- name,
- address and
- telephone number of pharmacy issuing the drug.
what do you do if a prescription comes in a container that is soiled, damaged, incomplete, illegible, or has a make-shift labels?
shall be returned to the issuing pharmacy for relabeling or disposal.
What to do if a prescription comes in a container without a label?
Containers without labels shall be destroyed as directed by the Department.
Can you transfer a patient’s prescription to another bottle?
Medications for each resident shall be kept and stored in the containers in which they were originally received; transfer to other containers is forbidden.
What facility levels need an emergency kit?
all of them!
Who approves the content allowed in an emergency kit?
the dep of health
What are the storage requirements of an emergency kit?
The emergency medication kit shall be kept in a separate, SEALED container, which shall be stored in a suitable place when not in use. Drugs requiring refrigeration shall be kept in a separate sealed container under proper refrigeration

Each e-kit shall be prepared, packaged and sealed by a pharmacist
Where can you find the list of medications inside the e-kit
a list of contents on the outside cover and within the box.
What requirements must be met in order for an E-Kit with CS to be in compliance with the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act
- ) CS from DEA registered hospital/pharmacy/practitioner
- ) Designated individuals have access
- ) ONLY permitted CS types and quantities
- ) Kit contains accurate records of the:
