YES! This is possible for ANY CS (ii-v) but only in a single dose or quantity essential for treatment

A provider may dispense by delivering to an ultimate user a controlled substance (Schedule II-V) in a single dose or in a quantity that is, in opinion of the practitioner, essential for the treatment of a patient

Correctional Facilities dispensing rules?

A

The Health Service Unit (HSU) within the facility will have access to a pharmacy service that follows MA laws

Additionally, each HSU will have a specific procedure/policy that must be adhered to and can be found within the standard operating procedures/contractual medical provider’s pharmacy procedure manual.

Specific requirements

  1. ) Inmate must present identification or be identified by correction staff
  2. ) All rx administration must be recorded on either the medication administration record or on a medication log including date/time and signed by the individual that administers the medication
  3. ) Inmate should be observed and if hoarding is suspected the medication shall be crushed and mixed in water (unless prohibited by medication stability)
  4. ) If an inmate receives a time-released formula for a controlled substance (such as a patch) they may NOT be housed within general population
  5. ) Some OTC products are sold in canteens and do not require a physician order
  6. ) All injectable medications (besides insulin) must be administered by the responsible physician
