11.8 Methods Of Maintaining Biodiversity Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is conservation?
The active maintaining of biodiversity
What is preservation?
The prevention of human activity affecting natural biodiversity
What is in situ conservation?
Conservation within the natural habitat
What is ex situ conservation?
Conservation out of the natural habitat
Define extinct.
No organisms of the species exist worldwide
Define extinct in the wild
Organisms of the species only exist in captivity
Define endangered
In danger of extinction
Define vulnerable.
Considered likely to become endangered in the near future
What is sustainable development?
Economic development that meets the needs of people today, without limiting the ability of future generations to meet their needs
What are the two types of reserves in in situ conservation?
Wildlife reserves and marine conservation reserves
What are the management methods used in wildlife reserves?
- Controlled grazing
- Restricting human access
- Controlling poaching
- Feeding animals
- Reintroduction of species
- Culling of invasive species
- Halting succession
Give examples of ex situ conservation sites.
- Botanic gardens
- Seed banks
- Captive breeding programmes
Why might an organism born in captivity not be suitable for release in the wild?
- Loss of resistance to diseases in the wild
- Learnt behaviours haven’t been developed (i.e hunting food)
- Genetic makeup of captive animals is too different from wild that they cannot interbreed
- Natural habitat must be restored before returning captive population
- Habitat is too small to reintroduce captive population
What did the C.I.T.E.S treaty do?
Regulated international trade of wild platn and animal species and their products
