Why does standing wave only occur at certain frequencies and what determines this? (3)

A

Determined by the wavelength

-Because the string length isn’t able to produce as much frequencies

The ‘permissible’ wavelengths are exact INTEGER fractions of the fundamental wavelength. Other wavelengths cannot exist. Correspondingly, the string can generate only those frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency, viz. 2f, 3f, 4f….etc; no other - all because the ends of the wire are fixed, and the standing wave has to have complete half-cycles. You cannot have a part of a half cycle. These frequencies are known as the harmonics of the fundamental frequency.
