What are the two different types of map views?
Map view- looking down on an object from above
Profile View- viewing object from the side
How can a map help determine a location
You can look at the latitude and longitude, or you can use nearby landmarks.
What are features on a map that help you read it?
Map scale- relationship between the distance on the map and the actual distance on the ground
Map legend- the key that lists the symbols
How do you read/find longitude and latitude?
Start with latitude ( up and down ) and then do longitude ( across )
What are the three map projections? Describe them.
Cylindrical- if you were to wrap a sheet of paper around the center of the globe
Conical- if you wrapped a cone around the globe
Azimuthal- flat surface to map one area of the globe
What can a topographic map (which displays the shape of the Earth’s surface) tell you about the Earth’s surfaces?
The shape, land features, elevation
What can you learn from geologic maps about the rocks near the Earth’s surface?
Types of rocks, age of rocks, fault lines
What types of modern technology are used in mapmaking?
GPS systems- used for navigation
Remote sensing- process of collecting info about an area without coming into contact with it
Landsat- scans entire surface of earth
OSTM/Jason-2 AND Jason-3- ocean topography
Seabeam- uses sonar to map the bottom of ocean
