female anat histology & pracs Flashcards

1
Q
A

The granulosa luteal cells are larger and clearer, as they contain lipids (cholesterol). This is the substrate for steroid production, primarily progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. They also produce some estrogen, from androgens supplied by the theca luteal cells.

The theca luteal cells are smaller and stained darker (due to less cytoplasm) than the granulosa luteal cells. They also produce progesterone, but continue to produce some androgens that they supply to the granulosa luteal cells to produce some estrogen.

Q

what are the small dark purple dots in this corpus albicans?

A

- Macrophages enter via the enhanced blood vasculature

  • Supply proteases which help break down the collagen
  • Corpus albicans eventually entirely degraded

Q

Label the ovarian structures:

  • CL, Follicles, antral follicle etc.
A
  • Antral follicle disappears because it is a fluid filled structure so you are left with a collapsed pocket where the follicle was
17
Q

Bovine ovary

  • unique structure of bovine ovary is….
A
  • corpus haemorrhagicum is unique feature of the bovine ovary

bovine ovary, what can we see?

A

active CL and antral follicle

20

sheep ovary: what structures can we see here

A
21
Q

A

pig (sow)

  • lots of follicles developing for multi litter species

Q

structure of granulosa cells in primordial follicles verse primary follicles are…

A

squamous/flattened cells in primordial follicles and single cuboidal granulosa cells in primary follicles
