Q

Matrix

A

structural proteins between cells; the ground substance (gel that fills the rest of the space)

A

located in hollow spaces called lacunae

Q

Areolar

A

most common type; found beneath basement membrane; fibrous proteins running in random directions; made up of fibroblasts and white blood cells

Q

Adipose

A

body storage for fat; primary cells are called adipocytes (leaves very little room for matrix)

Q

Cartilagenous

A

found at the ends of most bone; also called hyaline cartilage; also found on most ribs, larynx, pharynx, and trachea; bones were originally composed of hyaline collagen makes up most of matrix; avascular

Q

Hyaline Cartilage

A

one cell type is chondrocytes; chondrocytes are found in the lacunae, which produce collagen (makes up the majority of the matrix)

Q

Bone (Osseous)

A

mostly made up of matrix, but calcium is embedded into it (unlike cartilage tissue); has hollow tubes called Haversion Canals

Q

Haversion Canals

A

make way for blood vessels and they are surrounded by mature bone cells called osteocytes

Q

Dense

A

found in tendons and ligaments; is firm but also stretchy; primarily contains fibroblasts as its cell type, and collagen as its main fiber; the collagen runs parallel to stretch better
