What’s the policy of Autarky?

A
  • Economic self-sufficiency
  • Produce enough goods on its own so it doesn’t have to import goods
  • Doesn’t depend on imports
  • Raw materials were prioritised
  • Wanted to achieve autarky before the war started
  • Wanted to strengthen armed forces (needed raw materials)

He increased the rate of rearmament and the army grew rapidly. Hitler began to openly break the TOV (Austria 1938, Sudetenland 1938 and Poland 1939)

A

Unemployment dropped from 4.8mill to 0.5 mil.
Wages rose but were still lower than in 1928
By 1939, Germany was still not self-sufficient.
Overall it created jobs but did not reduce the amount of imported goods
