States of Matter
The three forms by which matter is classified: solid, liquid, and gas
Gas
The state in which matter has no fixed volume or shape
Liquid
The state in which matter has definite volume but has no specific shape
Solid
The state in which matter has a definite shape and volume
Pure Substance
Matter that has distinct properties and constant composition
Elements
Pure substances that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances
Compound
A substance composed of two or more elements; contains two or more kinds of atoms
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances in which each substance retains its own chemical identity
Law of Constant Composition
The observation that the elemental composition of a pure compound is always the same
Law of Definite Proportions
The observation that the elemental composition of a pure compound is always the same
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture without uniform composition, properties, and appearance throughout
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture with uniform composition, properties, and appearance throughout
Solution
A homogeneous mixture
