Assess the methods used in local communities to reduce the impact of globalisation on the environment (12)
Theme 1 -Sahel
Globalisation has created losers for the environment as it facilitated mass production in emerging economies. This has raised concerns for environmental sustainability which lead to increased localism and awareness of the impacts of the consumer society
Locals in Sahel -regreening project e.g. Farmer Managed Natural Regeration to restore millions of trees.
TIS- act as a carbon sink to combat desertification and extreme climate change threats like droughts as more moisture is returing to the atmosphere . Furthermore, this canreduce their reliance on global markets as a result of globalisation due to increase crop yields.
However, overfarming culture lead to more desrtifition and landdegradtion-harder to replenish thru just regreening strategies.
Overall, while sahelian regreening strategies demonstrate the power of local bottom up projects to counter environmental damage from globalisation, their methods aren’t long lasting and suffieict alone

Theme 2- developed countries
Local environmental campaigns voice their concerns to pressure the government to adapt sustainable infrastructure development regimes, adopting the NIMBYISM ideology.
E.g. the wildlife trust claimed that Boris Johnson’s HS2 railway will ‘stop nature’s recovery in its tracks,’ endangering species such as barn owls and otters.
TIS as it publicly scrutinised the gov for their lack of environmental concern for the British countryside, forcing him to avoid further construction on the green belt land.
Howver, local countryside campaigners rally against HS2- a project that would cut co2 by displacing air and road travel- yet rarely challenge the aviation industry or overconsumption culture driving more environtal damage.
Overall, despite this selective activism exposing weaknesses in developed world pressure groups has validity, the fact that protests in London gain global media attention can spur govs to adopt sustainable projects on a long term and national scale, more convincing.
