Q

Point 1 = environmental factors

A

Regions such as the Sahel, where there are arid conditions can exacerbate desertification as daily droughts can mean that the soil is vulnerable to the sun’s direct heat due to the lack of canopy. These arid conditions make it hard to grow crops as the soil isn’t saturated and fertile enough, meaning that they can’t contribute to trade as there is nothing profitable enough to sell as farmers are only partaking in subsistence farming, where they only grow crops to feed themselves to survive not to trade.

However, there is there are regreenign strategies such as the Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration to restore millions of trees and shrubs to allow natural growth rather than planting new trees from scratch increasing crop yield leading to better agricultural activity.

Overall the Sahel is heavily dependent on agriculture which means that they will continue to overgraze land leading to more desertificaton which will make these regreenign projects more elusive.

Q

Point 2 = political decison

A

In North Korea, where the premiership of Kim Jong Un censor social media which in turns prevents the free flow of information can hinder globalisation. For example in North Korea, the government has deliberately chosen to remain politically isolated from the rest of the world, where ordinary citizens do not have access to social media and there are no undersea cables connecting the country with anywhere else. This means that individuals are stripped from global perspectives.

However, while the UN condemns it human right records, the UN recognises North Korea as a sovereign state with a legitimate government, limiting intervention to soft power. This suggests that global institutions prioritise peace over imposing globalisation, allowing countries to chose isolation.

Overall, the UN allows countries to choose to be closed off from globalisation which can explain why country’s like North Korea continue to be isolated from globalised perspectives.
