Forest Ecology (Week 5) Flashcards
What is the most complex terrestrial ecosystem?
forests
Is it true that the more structural forests, the lesser niches and species?
No, more forest, more niche, more life
What does low foliage forestry compared to high foliage allow?
High foliage forest ecosystems allows for a lot of bird species, whereas low forest foliage allows for a lot of plants because there is not a resource depletion zone
What is the function of a forest ecosystem?
To provide nutrients and store carbon
In forest ecology, what are the two types of structure?
Vertical structure and horizontal structure
What do vertical structure in forest ecosystems refer to and provide?
They give shade, resulting in cooler temperature, usually reduced flooding due to taking most rain and snow, allow structural living places for birds, lizards, insects
What does horizontal structure in forest ecosystems refer to and provide?
The patchiness in trees such as variation in soils, moisture and production and provides nesting, etc
What is a forests ecology dependent on mostly?
Water, light and nutrients
What are biotic factors to consider in terms of the forest ecology?
Pathogens, herbivores which eat the green trees and plants
Do long thick, hard wood and leaves or shorter thin, soft wood live longer?
Thin woods reach their potential growth rate closer to mortality, whereas thicker leaved, hard woods are Long lived and grow much slower
In a decreased resource zone with increased stress, what grows more, softer, short lived woods/ leaves or thicker leave and hard wood?
In stress, short lived, soft wood will survive better under less resources and increased stress
