What was the Māori population in 1840 and where was the heavily located?
70-90k and in the north island.
When was the large migration of Pakeha to nz?

Who were these migrates and what religious beliefs did they hold?
They were missionary’s and Christian

Many chiefs became Christian

At this time period how did Pakeha compare Māori to themselves?
They thought they were superior in custumes, laws and people overall.
How did Pakeha belive that Māori could be equal?
They believed that they had to dismantle the culture
What were some Māori responses to the land taking?
The land war of 1843 in Wairua, the a northern war of 1845-1846, 1847- Whanganui.
What happened in the 1843 Wairua war?
European settlers tried to push Māori off of land in Wairua because they thought they had ownership. They arrested the Ngātai Toa chief Te Rauparaha.
What happened in the 1845 Northern War?
Hongi Heke chopped down the flag pole containing the Union Jack as he beloved that the control of Māori was damadging his mana.
What happened in the 1846 war?
In hutt valley there was a battle between the British army and Ngāti Toa.
What happened in the 1847 Whanagnui war?
There was tension between settlers and the tribe of Ngāti Haua over land which resulted in the attack led by Chief Te Rangi.
Through 1848 and 1856 what happened
There was an economic boom through trading and people were pursuing prosperity.
