12.1 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is variation and why is it important?
Variation is the difference in alleles within a population, and is important because more gene variation means that populations can recover from disasters.
How do new alleles pop up in any population?
Mutations during cell division
When genes have higher fitness, they show up __ in the gene pool over time
more
Does change in over time happen individually or across the whole population?
Across whole population
What are selective pressures?
Selective pressures are factors that can be sexual, environmental, or physiological and select for certain alleles based on what has better results for life.
How is genetic drift different from natural selection?
Natural selection favors desirable traits, while genetic drift is entirely chance.
