Q

How do scholars compare the Gospel of Matthew to the Gospel of Mark? Be able to describe examples of instances in which differences between those two Gospels reveal something significant about Matthew’s particular interests.

Q

How is Matthew unique compared to the other gospels?

A

Triads (instances of three) are used repeatedly in the gospel to represent the Holy Trinity

Doubling characters and events often occurs (two blind men, two sayings on divorce, Jesus sits on two donkeys, etc.)

Jesus is depicted as showing less human weakness

Jesus fulfills twelve Hebrew prophecies of the Old Testament, representing the twelve Tribes of Israel

Matthew is the only gospel to reference “the church” as an institution

The disciple Peter is frequently highlighted as an example, such as when Peter tries to walk on water, receive a blessing and receives the keys to the kingdom
