Describe Irrigation in Argentina

Irrigation channels date back to 16th Century
Water distributed regularly, stored in reservoirs until time to use it
vineyards irrigated by Flood irrigation = relatively cheap to run, allows water to drain deep into soil
used in 70% of vineyards
Increase use of Drip Irrigation, esp on sloped land, pumped from boreholes
More efficient use of water, and enhanced control of water application
What is the timing for irrigation?
Larger amounts in winter - to replicate winter rainfall, low amounts during growing season, to ensure roots grow at depth to find water, vine focuses on fruit development
How are vines trellised - traditional?
becoming more common?
Traditionally vines on Pergola system aka Parral - raised grapes away from heat of ground, plus shade for fruit
VSP enables use of modern canopy management and drip irrigation
Phylloxera in Argentina?
It is present, not caused major problems - maybe due to sandy nature of soil and arid climate
Majority of vines ungrafted
Grafted wines more common as still risk and better rootstocks have increased drought tolerance
Spraying in Vineyard?
Due to limited threat of fungal disease, little need for spraying, ideal location for Organic and Biodynamic viticulture
Adopting organic practices is increasing, but not many certified.
How are grapes harvested in Argentina?
Traditionally by casual labourers, but cost of living risen in recent years
Mechanical harvesting more common
What has investment in Argentina also improved? Who’s work?
Canopy management, better understanding of clonal selection by Dr Catena, plus how grape picking times affect style of wine, plus soil research, new areas nearer Atlantic and higher up
