Anti-emetics are medications that are used to reduce or prevent nausea and vomiting.

What are the classifications of anti-emetic medications?

A

Anti-emetic medications are classified according to which chemo-transmitter they work on into:
1. Muscarinic receptor antagonists:
- Atropine, Scopolamine (hyoscine), dicyclomine, trihexyphenidyl and benztropine
2. Histamine (H1) receptor antagonists:
- Promethazine, diphenhydramine, cyclizine, meclizine, cinnarizine and so on.
3. Dopaminergic (D1 & D2) receptor antagonists:
A. Non-selective D1 & D2 receptor antagonists:
I. Phenothiazines: thiethylperazine, chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine and perphenazine
II. Butyrophenones: haloperidol and droperidol.
B. Selective D2 antagonists: metoclopromide (plasil) and domperidone.
