Q

What is a biofilm?

A

A slime layer attached to a surface made up of a community of microorganisms, functions like multi-celled organisms

9
Q

How do biofilms form

A

Attachment of Microorganisms to a surface
Colonisation with formation of multi-celled layers
Exopolymer production- facilitates attachment by forming a matrix of columns which maximise nutrient delivery and waste removal
Dispersal- part of the biofilm then detaches and releases bacteria to start a new cycle of biofilm formation

16
Q

How can you control human/animal movement?

A

Limit the number of visitors on the farm, isolate animals on arrival, use a cleaning/ disinfection protocol

17
Q

How can you control contact with other farms?

A

Limit sharing of equipment, put fences up and limit contact with neighbouring animals

18
Q

How can you control Wildlife/Pests?

A

Maintain fences, use pest control

19
Q

How can you control contaminated feed/ water?

A

Remove the fallen stock, give access to clean water, store your feed properly

20
Q

What is domestic waste?

A

Normal, household waste

21
Q

How long should you keep a record of hazardous waste for?

A

at least 3 years

22
Q

What is an example of a biofilm?

A

Plaque

23
Q

What do biofilms do?

A

Protect the microorganisms from drying out, more difficult to remove, organisms are more resistant to an immune response

24
Q

What are some factors that effect the efficiency of disinfection?

A

Concentration, Contact time, Cleanliness and susceptibility of the organisms
