11
Q

name some properties of ionic bonds

A

-giant ionic lattice where there are strong electrostatic forces of attraction in all directions
-high melting points and boiling points because a lot of energy is required to break the strong bonds
-when melted or dissolved in water ionic compounds conduct electricity because the ions are free to move and carry current but not as a solid as the electrons are fixed in place

16
Q

what are some properties of alloys

A

-different sized atoms in the structure make it harder for layers to slide over so alloys cant be bent as well

17
Q

describe diamonds bonding and features

A

-each carbon is joined to 4 carbons
-very hard and has very hard melting point
-does not conduct electricity

18
Q

describe graphite bonding and features

A

-each carbon is bonded to 3 others covalently in hexagonal patterns
-each layer is not bonded to other layers so they can slide over each other
-conduct electricity

19
Q

what is graphene

A

-single layer of graphene
-useful in electronics
-very strong

20
Q

what are fullerenes

A

-molecules of carbon atoms with hollow shapes
-based on hexagonal rings of carbon atoms

21
Q

what are carbon nano tubes

A

-long cylindrical fullerenes
-useful for nano tech and technology
