Old vs. now world nose

A

Old world
- Dominance of earth or mineral charachter
- Dominance of non-fruit aromas & flavors
- Fruit becomes tart on the palate
- Non-fruit aromas & flavors more apparent on the finish

New World
- No dominant earth or mineral character
- Fruit leads & dominates non-fruit elements
- Fruit smells sweet & ripe, dominating the nose
- Fruit stays ripe or gets riper on the palate

A
  • Created by alcohol and / or residual sugar in the wine
  • Thin tears dissipate quickly or sheet on the glass indicate lower alcohol
  • Thick, slow moving tears indicate higher level of alcohol

  • Scale: light / medium / heavy
