Q

Explain the advantages of Mendel’s experimental system.

A

Since the pea plants could self fertilize, its allowed for cross-fertilization. This enabled mathematical analysis of his observations which made it easier to predict the outcome of the offspring’s traits

Q

Explain Mendel’s Principle of Segregation.

A

o 2 alleles for a gene segregate during gamete formation & are rejoined @ random, one from each parent, during fertilization
 Physical basis for allele segregation is the behavior of chromosomes during meiosis

Q

Compare the segregation of alleles with the behavior of homologues in meiosis.

A

Both alleles originate at the beginning and at end they separate into different gametes

Q

Compare dominant vs. recessive inheritance of human traits

A

o Dominant: BB/Bb- will show as long as there is one dominant allele
o Recessive: rr- only shows if there are 2 recessive alleles
