What are the advantages of visual guidance?
- Good for cognative learners - provides a mental picture
- Good for autonomous learners - allows identification of weak/incorrect subroutines
- Videos can be played in slow motion/annotated/motion capture
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
- Demonstration could be wrong
- To much information to process
- Demonstration could be to complex
Define verbal guidance and give an example
When a coach explains what is required
e.g. A coach tell a gymnast to hold their arms in crucifix parallel to the ground
What are the advantages of verbal guidance?
- Used along side visual guidance to reinforce
- At a cognitve stage the important parts can be picked out
- Autonomous learners can digest verbal guidance on its own
- It can be used to motivate performers if used correctly
- Can increase confidence e.g. “well done”
- Questioning can facilitate learning
What are the disadvantages of verbal guidance?
- No mental image
- Could confuse the performer
- Information overload
- Not good for cognative learners, requires basic understanding
Define mechanical guidance and give an example
Use of equipment to support a performer
e.g.
* Woggles
* Trampoline harness
* Stabilsers
What are the advantages of mechanical guidance?
- Reduces risk - reduces anxiety
- Develops kinaesthesia
What are the disadvantages of mechanical guidance?
- Performers become reliant
Define manual guidance and give an example
- Physical support of a performer
- The performer is placed in the correct position
e.g. a tennis coach getting the learner to follow the path of the forehand by holding their racquet with them
What are the advantages of manual guidance?
- Reduces risk - reduces anxiety
- Develops kinaesthesia
What are the disadvantages of manual guidance?
- Performers become reliant
