Systemic alkalinising agent. Increases plasma bicarbonate, buffers hydrogen ion and raises blood PH.

Following crush injury
-sodium ion help protect the cardiac cells membrane from effects of hyperk
-a rise in PH results in potassium moving into the cell which lowers the potassium concentration in the blood.
-rise in urinary pH reduces myoglobin deposition in the kidneys
