2
Q

define commensal

do they cause infection?

A

Organism which colonises the host but causes no disease in normal circumstances

prevent disease by reducing opportunity for bacteria to gain space and nutrients on the surfaces of the body

occasionally cause infection when host is compromised

ie. resident flora that are usually nonpathogenic

define an asymptomatic carriage

A

When a pathogen is carried harmlessly at a tissue site where it causes no disease

Q

define strain

A

a bacterium that has been isolated from a patient to distinguish it from bacteria of the same species that were obtained from other patients.

Although the same species, the genome sequences are invariably different among strains due to random mutation/gene loss or acquisition of new genes.

11
Q

define servoras / serotypes

A

are strains that have antigenic properties that differ from other strains of the same species.

12
Q

define Pathovars (or pathotypes

A

are strains that are distinguished by possession of
particular pathogenic mechanisms rather than being based on antigenic differences between molecules on the bacterial cell surface (the serotype).

However, different serovars may exist among members of each pathovar.

Q

define biovars/biotypes

A

variant bacterial strains that differ physiologically or biochemically from other strains in a particular species.

16
Q

define invasiveness

A

the capacity to penetrate mucosal surfaces to reach normally sterile sites

17
Q

what is the ‘two component sensor kinase’ system of bacteria

A

system used to sense changes in competing bacteria, nutrient availability, to see if they should release toxins in response to environmental changes

18
Q

define antigenic shift

A

Antigenic shift: sudden emergence of new subtype different to that of preceding virus.
Pandemics

19
Q

define antigenic drift

A

Antigenic drift: spontaneous mutations, occur gradually giving minor changes in hemagglutinin and neuraminidase.
