E2) ATP-PC system in exercise and sports performance Flashcards

1
Q

Key facts

A

Anaerobic- no oxygen
In the sarcoplasm
Muscle store small amounts of ATP- can be used immediately
Replenish ATP quickly- muscle use CP
High energy- CP bond broken → creatine kinase
Energy released- transferred to ADP to resynthesise ATP
1ATP- resynthesised for each molecule of CP

Q

Steps

A
  1. ATP
  2. ATPase release on of the phosphates
  3. Releases energy
  4. Left with ADP
  5. CP- separate with creatine kinase
  6. Energy released attaches the phosphate to the ADP
  7. Makes ATP

Q

Use in exercise

A

Lasts 10 seconds
High intensity- CP stores run out quickly
exercise intensity continues- PC stores will only partially replenish as not enough energy for creatine & phosphate to form creatine phosphate
work to rest ratio- determine how long it takes to replenish stores 1:10-12 (secs to recover)
