An Overview of Cell Flashcards

• Recap about basic informations about cell structure we are learning from lower grades

1
Q

Describe the outer boundary in cells?

A

Cells have particular outer membrane, a delimiting structure specially in animal cell is known as cell membrane.
Cell membrane is present in animal and plant cells.

Q

Whats the speciality in plant cells in terms of their outer boundary?

A

In plant cells there is a distinct cell wall, as the outer boundary and cell membrane is present within it.

Q

Comment about the nucleus in cells?

A

Nucleus, is dense membrane bound organelle nucleus contains chromosomes, which in turn contains genetic material, important for heredity

Q

how are cells classified, on what basis?

A

Based on the presence of well defined nucleus, cells can be classified into two types

  1. Prokaryotic Cells: cells which do not have well defined nucleus.
    Example: Bacterial Cells
  2. Eukaryotic Cells: Cells which have well defined nucleus
    Example: Human and Animal cells.

Q

what are the Similarities between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells

A

In both the cells a semi fluid matrix called cytoplasm which occupies the total volume of cell.

Functions: it is the main arena for cellular activities in both animal cells and plant cells

(ii) Various chemical reactions occur in it to keep the cell in its living state.

Ribosomes are non-membrane bound organelles found in all cells –
both eukaryotic as well as prokaryotic. Within the cell, ribosomes are
found not only in the cytoplasm but also within the two organelles –
chloroplasts (in plants) and mitochondria and on rough ER.

Q

What are Organelles?

A

Besides the nucleus, the eukaryotic cells have outer membrane bound distinct structures known as organelle.

Example: Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi complex, Lysosomes, Mitochondria, microbodies.

Q

What are the basic differences between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells?

A

Prokaryotic Cells lack organelles.

-Within Eukaryotic cells there are differences between animal and plant cells

Animal cell contain other non membrane bound organelle called centrosome which helps in cell division.

Plant cell contain plastids which are double membrane bound organelle known for having certain pigments.
