p. 75.1 Mercurius, deus mendāx, domum Alcumēnae cum patre Ioue, rēge et hominum et deōrum, adībit.
Mercury, a deceitful god, will approach the home of Alcumena with his father Jupiter, the king of gods and men.
p. 75.2 amat enim Iuppiter Alcumēnam, fēminam pulchram, uxōrem Amphitruōnis, uirī fortis.
For Jupiter loves Alcumena, a beautiful woman, the wife of Amphitruo, a brave man.
p. 75.3 Iuppiter igitur cum Alcumēna per noctem longam dormīre uolet. Alcumēna tamen uxor est summā continentiā, atque Amphitruōnem bene amat.
Jupiter therefore will wish to sleep with Alcumena through a long night. Alcumena however is a wife of the highest self-restraint, and she loves Amphitruo well.
p. 75.4 sī cōnsilia Iouis sciet, domō rēgem deōrum exīre iubēbit. difficile igitur Iouī opus erit.
If she will know the plans of Jupiter, she will order the kind of the gods to leave (her) house. Therefore Jupiter’s task will be difficult.
p. 75.5 sed Mercurius, deus summā audāciā, semper multa cōnsilia scit. imāginem igitur Sōsiae Mercurius capiet, Amphitruōnis Iouem capere iubēbit.
But Mercury, a god of the highest audacity, always knows many plans. Thereore he will take the appearance of Sosia, (and) he will order Jupiter to take (the appearance) of Amphitruo.
p. 75.6 sīc domum Alcumēnae intrābunt duo dēī, alter Sōsiae similis, alter Amphitruōnis. et Iuppiter noctem faciet longam et nigram.
Thus (in this way) the two gods will enter Alcumena’s home, one like Sosia, the other like Amphitruo [lit. like of Sosia … like of Alcumena]. And Jupiter will make a night (that is) long and black.
p. 75.7 mox in oppidum reueniet Sōsia, seruus ācer sed stultus.
soon Sosia will return to the town, a slave keen but stupid.
p. 75.8 uolet uictōriam exercitūs Amphitruōnis Alcumēnae nūntiāre, sed nōn poterit. Mercurius enim seruum domum intrāre nōlet.
He will want to announce the victory of Amphitruo’s army to Alcumena, but he will not be able. For Mercury will not want the slave to enter the home.
