Rate Of Reactions Flashcards
What is le chatliers principle
If a system is at equilibrium and a change is made to any of the conditions,
then the system responds to counteract the change (Le Chatelier’s principle)
What are catalyst and how do they effect rate of reaction
Substances that speed up chemical reactions without being used up
How is the rate of reaction effected by changing the pressure
Increasing the pressure increases the frequency of collisions and so increases the rate of reaction
What is the rate of reaction
The amount of product formed over time or how quickly reactant get used up
Describe collision theory
Chemical reaction occur when reacting particles collide with each other with sufficient energy
The activation energy is the amount of energy needed for particles to react
Rate of reaction equation
Rate of reaction = amount of reactant used up/time
Rate of reaction = amount of product formed/time
How do you find the rate of reaction in a graph
1.) draw a tangent
2.) find the gradient of a tangent
How do catalyst decrease the activation energy
Catalyst provide a different pathway for a chemical reaction that has a lower reaction energy
Catalyst decrease the activation energy therefore increasing the proportion of particles with energy
How can you tell that a reaction is complete
No more gas is produced and the line graph become horizontal
How do reversible reactions work
If a reversible reaction is endothermic one way ,it is exothermic in the opposite direction
The same amount of energy is transferred each way
What happens in a reversible reaction occurs in a closed system
Equilibrium is reached when reactions occur exactly at the same rate in each direction
