Q

Overview of power & media industries by James and Curran Seaton. (Theory)

A

“Power and media industries is the idea that the media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and power. The type of media concentration generally limits or inhabits variety, creativity and quality. By keeping industries free from monopolies oligopolies it results in more varied and adventurous media productions.”

Q

How can Curran and Seaton’s theory be applied to radio and the set text of late night women’s hour?

A

LNWH applies through the remit of the BBC as the PSB create platforms for more varied and adventurous media productions.
The theory is challenged as the BBC are not driven by the logic of profit and power and regulate independently
Also, the lack of media concentration means that the BBC are not inhibited the broadcast variety, creativity and quality.
