7.1 skin system Flashcards

1
Q

Outline the functions of the skin (regulation of body temp)

A
  • evaporative cooling
  • increase blood flow to the skin
  • increase sweat

Q

Protection & Immunity

A
  • protects underlying tissues against impact, abrasion, fluid loss, and harmful chemicals
  • physical barrier to pathogens
  • surface of the skin has an acidic pH to prevent bacteria from reproducing
  • special cells produce a pigment called melanin in the basal layer of the epidermis to prevent UV damage
  • sensory nerve endings in the skin can detect pain and trigger reflex actions

Q

Sensation

A
  • detection of touch, pain, and temperature
  • info passed to nervous system
  • different receptors are found in different levels of the skin, firing impulsions to communicate with the rest of the nervous system
