How does the closeness of an election correlate with turnout?

A

Turnout tends to be higher when the result of the election is in doubt. For instance, turnout was lower in 2001 and 2005 when a labour victory was a foregone conclusion. By contrast, turnout was much higher in 1974 and 1992, when the result of the election was in doubt
