Q

Function of the nervous system

A

Body’s control and communication system
-complex system that controls both voluntary and involuntary processes
-simplified into 3 steps:
Sensory input, integration, and motor output

Q

In very simple terms, describe the function of the nervous system

A

To gather information from the external or internal environment, integrating multiple signals to create a complete picture, and executing a motor output response to the environment

Q

Organization of the nervous system

A

Divided into two principal subdivisions:

  1. Central Nervous System (CNS)
-made up of the brain and spinal cord
-commonly referred to as the “control center” of the body
-where all signals come to and from, where integrated and where information can be stored
  2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
-composed of all the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord
-includes: cranial nerves, spinal nerves, the autonomic nervous system, the special sense organs
-brings signals to and from the central nervous system

Q

What is one similarity of the efferent and afferent neurons

A

Both are part of the PNS and function to carry electrical signals

Q

Explain one difference between efferent and afferent neurons

A

Efferent neurons are part of the motor division and carry signals away from the CNS
Afferent neurons are part of the sensory division and carry signals to the CNS
