What is post traumatic stress disorder? (PTSD)

A
  • Disturbing pattern of behaviours demonstrated by one who has witnessed or been confronted with a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, combat or an assault
  • Exposed to an event that posed actual or threatened death or serious injury and responded with intense fear, helplessness or terror
  • Disorder associated with a history of an event exposure

What are the four subcategories of symptoms for PTSD?

A
  • Reexperiencing the trauma through dreams or recurrent and intrusive thoughts,
  • Avoidance/Emotional numbness: avoids stimuli associated with the trauma, feelings of detachment, numbing responses, unable to gain control over life, avoidance behaviours
  • Negative cognition, thoughts
  • Hyperarousal: persistently reexperiences the trauma through memories, dreams, flashbacks, or reactions to external cues about the event
    Signs of increased arousal: insomnia, irritability angry outbursts

What is acute stress disorder?

  • Occurs after a traumatic event
  • Reexperiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal that occur from 3 days to 4 weeks following trauma
  • Can be a precursor to PTSD
