What is the history of eating disorders?
- females used to fast to achieve purity
- doctors use to prescribe self-starvations to avoid obesity
What is an eating disorder?
rumination disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.
- anorexic, bulimic, obese
What is anorexia?
person eats too little (starves)
What is bulimic?
person eats chaotically
what is obese?
person eats too much
What are the tow neurotransmitters changes that causes eating disorders?
norepinephrine and serotonin
What is anorexia nervosa?
they do not lose their appetite they ignore their hunger and all physical weakness and fatigue
- unusual or ritualistic food behaviours
- intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat
What are the two anorexia subtypes?
- restricting
- bing eating/purging
What is binge eating?
consuming large amounts of food within two hours or less
what is purging?
compensatory behaviours designed to eliminate food consumed by these means:
- vomitting
- misuse of laxatives, enemas, diuretics
What is the treatment for anorexia?
- medical management(IV, tube feedings, monitor CV status, rehydration/ correction of electrolyte imbalances
- psychotherapy
- psychopharmacology
What are the types of medications used for anorexia and why?
- amitriptyline and antihistamine cyproheptadine promote weight gain
- olanzapine effects body image distortions
- fluoxetine prevents relapse
What are non-pharmacology treatment for anorexia?
family therapy, individual therapy, CBT enhanced(talking),
What is bulimia nervosa?
binge eating frequently begins during or after dieting. may eat restrictively singing and purging episodes
What are some symptoms of bulimia?
weight may by normal or slightly above, tooth erosion, esophageal damage, other GI concerns, psychological issues
