Lab Exercise 1 (Hand Washing) Flashcards
Define Transient flora
organisms you acquire through your daily activities. Pick up temporarily then gone. (some harmless & ones pathogens cause infection)
Define Resident flora
organisms that are generally present on humans (normal flora) Don’t cause disease, beneficial, unharmful
Define disease
a set of signs (high fever) or symptoms (complains, stomach ache) that interfere with normal functioning (ex vomiting, waking up)
Define opportunistic pathogen
an organism that needs certain conditions to cause disease. Normally don’t cause disease but can under certain (some) conditions. ex” cut on skin, another infection @ same time
Define pathogen
An organism that causes disease. Able to cause disease by having to evolve & make way around normal barriers and immune function
What’s the purpose of washing your hands? What does the CDC say about it?
Handwashing is the single most important procedure for preventing nosocomial (hospital acquired) infections
If given a plate could you determine if hand sanitizer removed the transient flora?
There was no colonies on that quadrant
Is it always “a good thing” if you see no colonies in any quadrant?
Not always becasue if you dont see no colonies after washing it could mean you didn’t scrub as hard to bring up that flora.
Colonies in the scrub quadrant most likely represented which group of organisms:
transient or resident flora?
Resident Flora- unharmful, normal flora
Microbial antagonism
growth of some organism(normal flora) prevents growth of others(pathogen: disease causing organisms)
