Q

How can we measure GFR?

A

After intravenous injection of a tracer, which is excreted from the body by glomerular filtration only, GFR can be measured
from its plasma clearance, i.e. excretion rate relative to the plasma concentration or from the ratio between the injected dose
and the area under the plasma concentration curve. Plasma clearance of 51Cr-EDTA involves a single intravenous injection
followed by blood sampling from 2 or 3 to 4, 5 or 24 h. The lower the GFR, the later is blood sampling needed.
