Q

Gradually prejudice and anti-Semitism grew- so experiences
were increasingly negative – why?

A

To gather funds to pay high taxes ( tallages) to the King they
charged high interest rates.

Over time more & more people had borrowed money and
resented the high costs of loans

2.The Crusades- ‘Holy wars’ to control Jerusalem and surrounding
areas led to the Pope issuing anti Muslim and Jewish orders

The Church taught Muslims were ‘unbelievers’ and should be
persecuted as they did not follow Christ.

Jews were also ‘unbelievers’ and so all this encouraged persecution.

  1. The Church changed rules allow Christian money lenders –
increasingly Lombardy bankers meant Jewish money lenders were
    not needed.

The King had less need to offer protection
