encouraged to settle.
So religion, government invitation and
economics drove migration to Sandwich &
Canterbury.
Flemish migrants in Sandwich were successful. ……… were allowed
for their markets. By 1582 ,,,,,, ‘Strangers’ made up………% of the town.

Why did Flemish receive tension
However Flemish migrants to Sandwich faced more hostility.
People began to complain the Flemish ‘were taking their jobs’
Rules were made banning them from any trade but weaving &
fishing
Some set up as tailors or farmers but were fined
The Flemish complained to Elizabeth but she didn’t do anything but they were allowed to move where did they go
Some moved to Canterbury & many more moved the whole cloth
industry to Colchester, where many had migrated in the middle
ages too.
