Alibi
a statement that the accused was someplace else when the crime was committed
Insanity
People can’t be held accountable if they don’t know what they’re doing
Irresistible impulse test
to prove a mental disease that causes a person to be unable to tell the difference between right and wrong or unable to “resist” themselves from committing a crime
American Law Institute Test
person lacks the capacity to understand the requirements of the law
Entrapment
a person claims that they were tricked into committing a crime by the police to commit a crime they would not normally have committed
Self defense
Protecting yourself when you believe you’re in danger
Defense of family members
If the person believes a family member is in immediate danger of being hurt/killed
Infancy
Young children lack the moral sense to understand right from wrong
Intoxication
Generally not accepted as a defense, unless the person was involuntarily intoxicated – and was lacking the ability to understand their actions
Mistake

All citizens are presumed to know the most basic criminal laws
Consent

Ex: you illegally sell drugs to a person willing to buy drugs
Duress
Being under a lot of pressure
Statute of Limitations
Places a limit on the time period that the state can prosecute a crime
