What is abdominal plasty

A

Remove excess skin and fat
Liposuction may be done together with the abdominoplasty(I usually do liposuction on your abdominal flanks/ sides
Not the central abdomen

Complications

A

Atelectasis(lung collapse)
may be due to- pain as patients are afraid to cough
- increased intraabdominal pressure after muscle plication
Poor scarring such as hypertrophic scars or keloids
Sepsis of the wounds
Poor wound healing and skin loss (necrosis)
Bleeding and haematoma
Seroma – fluid accumulation under the wound
Deep vein thrombosis or blood clot
Pulmonary Embolus – a blood clot moving to the lungs
Fat embolus may happen with liposuction

Post op management

A

Hospitalization 24hrs-48hrs
Drains in situ
Catheter removed day 1 post op to encourage mobilization
Breathing exercise to manage atelectasis
Physiotherapy- chest
- assist with mobilization
Pressure garment- to reduce the risk of seroma formation. Also part of scar management therapphy
Mobilization every 2 hrs to improve circulation on the limbs and to reduce the risk of DVT and pulmonary embolism which may lead to death
