- William tried to install the Norman, Robert de Comines, as Earl of Northumbria; Robert and army of 900 killed because Northumbrians didn’t want/support this; Edgar Atheling joined rebellion after massacre at Durham.

- response to the strong resistance of the Northumbrian people

- many were scared and some even driven to insanity
