13.1 Coordination Flashcards
(6 cards)
In what two ways do animals react to changes in their internal and external environment
through electrical responses (via neurones) and through chemical responses (via hormones)
Define homeostasis
the regulation of the internal environment of an organism or cell to maintain a stable and optimal internal state, despite external changes
What is cell signalling and how does it occur
the way in which cells communicate with each other one cell releases a chemical which has an effect on another cell, known as a target cell
What two things can cells do through the use of cell signalling
transfer signals locally between neurones at synapses (neurotransmitter)
- transfer signals across large distances using hormones
what do plants do to respond to internal and external changes without a nervous system?
They adapt through the use of plant hormones
what do nervous and hormonal systems rely on as they coordinate the activities of a whole organism?
Cell signalling
