14.2 Structure and function of the pancreas Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the two main functions of the pancreas
EXOCRINE GLAND - secrete protease, amylase, lipase
ENDOCRINE GLAND - insulin & glucagon
What’s an exocrine gland
EXOCRINE GLAND - produces enzymes and releases them via a duct into duodenum
Eg secretes protease, amylase, lipase
What’s an endocrine gland
Produces hormones and releases them directly into the bloodstream
What’s the islet of langerhans and what are the two types of cells there made up of
specialised cells within pancreas
responsible for producing insulin + glucagon
Made of of alpha and beta cells
What’s the function of alpha cells
Produce and secrete glucagon
What’s the function of beta cells
Produce and secrete insulin
Which of alpha and beta cells are larger and more abundant in the islet o langerhans tissue
Alpha
Which tissue are exocrine and endocrine tissue in the pancreas
exocrine - pancreatic acini
endocrine - Islets of Langerhans
