Living With Tectonic Hazards πŸ‘πŸŒ‹ Flashcards

1
Q

Why might people be forced to live near tectonic hazards?

May not be able to afford to move somewhere else
May not know the risks

Q

Why do people voluntarily live by tectonic hazards?

A
  • always lived there - moving means leaving family, friends, jobs, etc
  • HICs closely monitor hazards and evacuation plans minimise risk
  • minerals from volcanic ash makes soil fertile, attracting farmers (e.g. Mount Etna for grapes)
  • tourist attractions, people live nearby to work the tourist industry (e.g. Mount Vesuvius)

Q

How can earthquakes/tropical storms be predicted?

A

Earthquakes: very hard to predict, seismometers and lasers monitor plates - small warnings

tropical storms: monitoring weather using satellites, monitoring water temp

Q

How can people be prepared for earthquakes/tropical storms?

A
  • evacuation
  • emergency kits
  • bunkers
  • education
  • avoid building in high-risk areas
  • waterproof containers in the home

Q

How can we protect from earthquakes and tropical storms?

A

Quakes:
- reinforce buildings with concrete to absorb quake’s energy
- strengthen buildings with steel frames so they won’t collapse
- automatic shut-off switches prevents fires

Tropical storms:
- circular homes (protection from strong winds)
- reinforce buildings
- waterproof everything
