A

Initially granted £100 per person, was criticised on the grounds that as a universal payment made regardless of the recipient’s income it was wasteful of public money which could have been directed to areas of greater need.

A

Adjustment of the measure previously introduced by the Major government, which had replaced the existing unemployment benefit and income support with a single jobseeker’s allowance. Labour aimed to streamline the application process by removing the means test attaching applicants and allowing them greater time and flexibility in their search for work.

What was the working families tax credit and child tax credit?

A

Aimed at reducing child poverty. Under the working families tax credit arrangement, families with dependent children whose income from employment was below a minimum level, as judged by the price of essentials, were entitled to a tax allowance that in effect raised their wages.

A

Plans were laid out for turning the majority of state secondary schools into ‘academies’, whose main purpose was ‘to improve pupil performance and break the cycle of low expectations’. The academies would be funded through both local authority grants and private commercial sponsorship.

A

A

Criticised on the basis that religious hatred was too imprecise an attitude to legislate against and that existing laws against incitement already gave adequate protection.

A

Blair’s babes - 101 women MPs elected in 1997. Laobur had adopted all women shortlists in half the constituencies judged to be winnable in the 1997 election. Sex Discrimination Act - allowed political parties to have all-female shortlistings.

A

2003 - declared that a local authority shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting or promote the teaching in any maintained school etc. Removal of the stigma surrounding homosexuality seen as a further stage in the movement towards a tolerant society.

In what way were relations between New Labour and trade unions strained?

A

After the removal of Clause IV, Blair made it clear that the traditional relationship between Labour and trade unions had been damaged. New Labour further alienated trade unions through offering assurances to the city of London, showing how trade unions were pushed aside in favour of electoral success.

A

Removal of the starting rate in 2007
5% decrease in corporation tax allowed companies to lower their contributions to UK finances.

A

1998 - designed to correct minor incidents that wouldn’t normally warrant persecution. Not considered very effective as didn’t tackle actual problems.

A

2006 - made it an offence to glorify terrorism, and extended the time that the police could detain a terrorist without charging them with an offence.

A

An openly racist group allowed to operate due to the removal of censorship laws. The BNP was trying to appeal to people disenfranchised by modern Britain launching a “Campaign against Islam” after the 9/11 attacks.

A

In 1997 - made it a mission to hold a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European union along with pushing a tradionalist agenda.
