Lecture quiz 4/19/23 (wednesday) Flashcards

1
Q

What is a limiting amino acid?

A
  • for a protein to be synthesized, all require amino acids must be present at the time of synthesis.
  • if an amino acids is in short supply, it will limit the process - it will be the limiting amino acid

Q

What is another way of describing a limiting amino acid

A

-protein barrel and the essential amino acid as the individual staves making up the barrel
-if one stave is short than the other it will be limiting since the barrel can only be filled to the level of the shortest stave
- If one amino acid is deficient, proteins can only be synthesized to the level of availability of that amino acid

Q

What is protein quality?

A
  • the nutritional value of proteins in feed ingredients varies
  • primarily dependent on the composition of amino acids and the digestibility of the protein

Q

What do we watch out for in ruminants?

A
  • we only care for protein quantity not quality
  • some of the npn in rumenants there is bacteria that makes npn to EAAA

MAKE SURE ONLY GIVE LITTLE NPN IN THE DIET CAUSE ITS DEADLY IF TOO MUCH

What are minerals?

A
  • makes uo 3-5% of the body dry weight = depends on what species
calcium is 50% phosphorus 25% and other minerals 25

Q

what is the ratio of Ca:P

A

1:1 to 2:1
young and dairy = 1.5:1 to 2:1
hens = 6:1 cause of egg shells

16
Q

What are the two mineral classificationss?

A

major and minor

17
Q

What are considered as major mineralss?

A

greater levels or need in large amounts in diet = Ca,P,Na,Cl,Mg,K,S

18
Q

what are trace minerals?

A

low levels in animal body = small amounts in the diet
Co,Cu,F,Fe,Mn,Mo,Se,Zn

19
Q

What are natural sources of minerals?

A

forage plants = grains fair source of P and low in others
lots pf phosphorus present in grains = phytate in the grain = can be utilized by ruminants = not well in non ruminants
s

20
Q

What is added in swime and poultry diet
?

A

phytase enzyme = splits phosphorus from phytate

= facilitates the hydrolysis to plant phytate and releases is P for utilization

21
Q

What are the importantt functtions of mineralss?

A

structural - primary component of bones and teeth
activators or components of enzyme systems
- maintain of osmotic pressure = regulate exchange of water and solutess within the animal body (Na,Cl and K)
- constituents of organic compounds = proteins and lipidss
